Find out more about the Earth heritage of Dunwich in the company of Dr Ruth Siddall and Tim Holt-Wilson, in partnership with Dunwich Museum and the Geological Society of Norfolk.
The old walls of Dunwich are full of local flint and also rich in exotic stone types, including glacial boulders and ship’s ballast, some from as far away as Scotland and Scandinavia - perhaps even the Mediterranean!
This day event will include an introduction to the geology of rock types – local and exotic – followed by a field trip to look for them in the walls.
By the end of the day, you can expect to be familiar with identifying several distinctive rock types, including Caen limestone, Eocene cementstone and Swedish flint. Prepare to be amazed at what there is to discover!
This event is free of charge.
But please bring cash with you as we would be delighted if you made donations. to be split between Dunwich Museum, Dunwich Greyfriars Trust and St James's Church.
Participants will need to bring appropriate clothing for an outdoor excursion in July, and provide their own refreshments. NB, there is a beach café and pub in the village. There are lavatory facilities near the café and at Dunwich Museum.
The walking distance is about 1 mile / 1.6 km.
The event is generously funded by a grant from the Suffolk County Council Culture Project Fund.
